Diet and Exercise, How important is it?
Hello everyone San here again,
Today’s topic is one that the First Lady Michelle Obama has been a champion of since she first became our First Lady. She has taken on the obesity challenge and has challenged the entire population of the United States to exercise and eat properly. I have yet to see if there has been any dramatic effect from her efforts but I know that she has made a lot of valid points and I want to bring some of those out in my post today.
Getting the right kind of exercise is more important than just exercising.
Today’s topic is the importance of getting the right kind of exercise and eating not just a good diet but a diet designed to make sure that you mind is functioning at its peak as well as the rest of your body. You are what you eat, I am sure you have heard this before. But you spend long hours in front of a computer or at a service counter and your body needs to have some kind of distraction to avoid burnout.
Two things are the most important
The two things that your body needs most are exercise that creates endurance, strength, flexibility, helps you keep your range of motion (very important as you age) and will boost your metabolism at the same time. The second thing that your body needs is a diet that is rich in whole foods that are easy enough to break down and boost metabolism and be rich in fiber and nutrients that the body needs for energy.
What is good exercise?
Let’s talk about exercise first. We all know that we need to do it, most of us dread the thought of working our way into a sweat at the gym or buying some expensive piece of equipment that sooner or later gets to be more like a clothing rack and less of a workout device. I don’t advocate those things. Exercise should be simple, so simple that you don’t have to think about it while you are doing it. You are not training to be an athlete, you are training so that you can just enjoy your life, so enjoy life while you are training.
Keep it simple
We won’t be talking about things like P90X, even though I am a big fan of Tony’s and I admire his training. No gym memberships are necessary either and you won’t have to look into get a Bowflex or something like that either. Like I said let’s keep it simple.
I like to walk, walking provides you with great advantages. You can walk for hours and listen to your favorite music, an audio book, you can even work while you walk on your smart phone or tablet. (I don’t recommend this because the whole idea of exercise is to think about other things besides work). Whatever you are into you can do it why you walk.
I like to walk with other people and talk, if we get to the point where we are having trouble talking while we are walking then we know we are going just a little too fast and we slow it down. Benefits of walking: Builds strength in the entire body, shrinks the core and shapes it, boosts metabolism and increases endurance. Stretching a little bit before the walk and a great deal after well keep you flexible and limber with no loss of range of motion. It is also a low impact exercise and good for people, (like me) who have problems with their joints.
The next exercise that I find fun and interesting is Yoga. Yoga is great for entire body fitness as it promotes extreme flexibility and strength. Yoga also increase the metabolism and enhances endurance. You can attend classes or get videos for instruction, both are fairly inexpensive and in plentiful supply everywhere. I personally use Tony Horton’s from his P90x Collection (Click on that if you are interested in that product), you can get it by clicking this link Tony Horton Yoga.
I also love to ride bikes. Now I am a mountain bike kind of person. You may not be, there are lots of models of bikes and lots of brands to choose from. I don’t recommend going down to the local bike shop and putting down $1000 on a bike until you are sure what kind of biking you will be doing. Wal-Mart has lots of bikes for much less and they will get you started and have everything you need from helmets to lights for the bike. That is where I got my first Mountain bike and I fell in love with the activity so I go whenever I can.
There is a great dry canyon at the end of my street with areas for riding so I go most every day that I don’t walk the path in the same canyon. Towns and cities are learning that a majority of the population is into walking and biking and build such areas as this for the simple pleasure of using them for such purposes.
Zumba Baby! Yeah
The next exercise that I love to do, especially with my wife, is Zumba. I thought that it would be something that I would hate, but it actually gives you all of the benefits that you need to stay healthy and it has one added element that I did not think of when I started it . I actually learned how to dance. I am not saying I am good, I am just saying I know the steps. You can go to a live Zumba class in almost any town or you can check out getting the videos by clicking here Zumba.
The last exercise on my list is Tai Chi. Yeah I know, it looks like you are practicing Kung Fu or something. The reality of it is that you are practicing hand eye coordination, muscle control, strength of movement and control of that movement, motion control and to think while you act. This is a great exercise for your mind and your body. Very relaxing, I recommend giving it one try just for fun. This is a beginners guide and is an inexpensive video for you to try, Yang Tai Chi for Beginners with Master Yang, Jwing-Ming
The whole point of exercise – relieve stress!
Remember the whole point of exercise is to relax your body and get rid of stress. Choose exercises that you like doing, not just the ones I have listed here, that way you are in a better position to stick with it as you form this new habit. Start out slow, maybe two or three times a week for a while until you are comfortable doing more, then maybe four or five times a week. I am at the four or five times a week point and I alternate what I am doing each week so I don’t get bored.
Second is eating properly
The second part of my message today is about how to eat properly.
The medical experts are right, listen to them
A well balanced diet that is heavy in protein and fiber is what most nutritionists will tell you that you need. Since I tend not to trust most people in this manner I had to check out some diet plans that included these ideas to find out if what they are saying is true. I found out that I can lose weight, without heavy exercise, just by following their suggestions. So what I am saying is that the health professionals that are telling you that you can lose weight just by controlling what you eat are absolutely correct.
Choosing a diet plan
There are many diet plans out there and that makes the choice on which one to follow very difficult. I chose to follow what is being called the Paleo diet plan. This plan states that it is a return to the types of foods that our ancient ancestors ate. Why? Because study of their remains shows no signs of obesity or other food related diseases like diabetes and hypertension. What the people ate that lived in that time period came directly from the trees, the ground and the water. The meat was fresh off of the animal from the hunt that day.
No I am not saying that you will have to go out and hunt your food every day. What you can find in the grocery store is just find, if you can get it without added stuff it would be even better. If you cannot recognize what it is that you are cooking or eating then maybe you shouldn’t be putting it in your mouth. Eat whole foods not processed like oranges instead of orange juice. Orange juice spikes your insulin and actually causes you more health problems rather than helps, because it concentrates the sugars while removing the needed fiber from the food.
I found a very nice cookbook on the diet that comes complete and I learned how to prepare the meals from the easy to read and follow instructions. It is called The New Paleo Diet Cookbook by Paleo Leap. You can check it out by clicking on this link, Paleo Leap, or by reading my review by clicking this link, My Paleo Leap Review. There is also a banner below that will take you to their website and you can check it out directly from them.
I chose this cookbook because of the outstanding commitment that they have to their customer service and quality. They have answered all of my questions and gave me the confidence I needed to use this book without doubts. I recommend you checking it out.
The wrap up.
To bring this to a conclusion just remember that in order to perform at your peak you must be at peak performance. Diet and exercise together are the key to being successful. Try it for one month and you will see a dramatic change in your ability to get your work done and you will have a better attitude about everything in the process. Exercise creates endorphins, endorphins take away pain and a pain free body is a very happy body.
